Networking

"LANS and WANs"
What is a Network?

A Network is a group or assembly of computers that are connected together via fiber-optic cable or CAT 5-e computer cable. LAN stands for Local Area Network while WAN stands for Wide Area Network.

Most all Networks consist of one or two computers that are not only connected together but are connected to a Server as well.

A Server is considered to be the "brain of the network" and is where all pertinent data is stored from each PC on the network.

Each individual PC may connect to the Server to view files via the Network and an individual using the Server or maintaining the Network may connect to each individual PC that is networked.

Maintaining a Network

One of the most important aspects to maintaining a network is providing a means of backing up the information that is not only stored on the PCs but on the Server as well. There are many kinds of software used to backup information or data, however, it is important to have your network administrator schedule and then monitor each backup to be sure that all data selected or chosen is being backed up completely and securely. You also need to make sure that the backups are taking place during the evening or a time that is less interruptive to daily operations performed.

Another important aspect to maintaining a network is security. Security is important in regard to networks because the network administrator has to decide or is told by the customer who is granted access to certain files or data and who should not be granted access. This is an on-going process as several individuals within an organization could leave and several could be hired, so this is definitely a maintenance- oriented task.

Networks, in addition, need to possess the latest in technology in terms of operating systems and hardware. And as you may change the software on your PC it may be necessary to update the software on the Server to keep everything compliant and in working order.

Remember, a network is suppose to function as a whole or one and if the Server has older software than your PCs, you could experience compliancy and down-time issues. Your network will support your organization as long as you maintain it to do so.
